Cuomo Earns Strong Backing from NYC Labor Unions Ahead of Mayoral Race
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

On Monday, April 14th, Andrew Cuomo received crucial endorsements for his mayoral run in New York City. Two major labor unions, 32BJ SEIU and the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council (HTC), publicly declared their support for him. These unions represent over 120,000 employees in essential sectors such as building services, healthcare, and hospitality, offering a significant boost to Cuomo’s campaign in a city with a strong union presence.

Both unions had previously backed Mayor Eric Adams in the 2021 election. However, with Adams now running as an independent candidate after leaving the Democratic primary, they have shifted their support to Cuomo. Manny Pastreich, president of 32BJ SEIU, highlighted Cuomo’s commitment to workers, stating, “Andrew Cuomo is equipped to stand up to attacks on our city that threaten our finances, our jobs, our public transportation, our healthcare, our social security and our rights.” Rich Maroko, president of HTC, also praised Cuomo’s leadership, saying, “When we need him in a fight, he will be in the foxhole with us until the end.”

In addition to these endorsements, Cuomo has garnered support from other key unions, such as the District Council of Carpenters, as well as notable political figures including U.S. Representatives Gregory Meeks and Ritchie Torres, and Assemblywoman Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn.

These endorsements enhance Cuomo’s position as a leading candidate in the Democratic primary for mayor. Despite his resignation amid several sexual harassment allegations, Cuomo remains focused on his vision for the city’s future. He aims to address pressing issues like affordable housing, healthcare costs, and job security for union workers, all while positioning himself as a champion for working families.

With substantial backing from labor organizations, over $1.5 million in campaign contributions, and a lead in the polls, Cuomo appears to be well-positioned to challenge other candidates in the upcoming mayoral race. Although his past scandals continue to be a contentious issue, his supporters are rallying behind his achievements for workers and his plans to tackle the city’s most pressing challenges.
